Environmentalism

We live on one unique planet that is increasingly stressed with a growing population, shrinking green spaces, and ever more invasive economic and manufacturing practices.  At the same time, respect for the planet and reduced reliance on fossil fuels and environmentally degrading manufacturing is now possible - thanks to significant advances in science and technology.  Our schools must be centers where cleaner living practices and a respect for the environment must be taught through science and fact-based learning. Without this, our future and that of our planet is at risk.

  • Increasing the amount of time dedicated to the science of climate change education will also foster fact-based learning, and an appreciation for the fragility of our unique planet and the importance of sustainable economic practices for our future.

  • Ensuring conversations and organized student-led activism on climate change is both encouraged and emphasized in all Montgomery County Schools. Starting early with Elementary and Middle school students on Climate Science will ensure a healthy respect for the environment we all depend on for sustenance.

  • At schools, increasing vegan, vegetarian, kosher, halal, and gluten-free lunch and breakfast choices not only pays tribute to cultural diversity, but also embeds in our minds that small dietary alterations can improve not just our health, but the health of the planet.

  • Our schools should support climate change mitigation through increasingly sustainable practices, adherence to environmental friendly choices, and a decrease waste in school cafeterias and classrooms.
